Human Rights Day holds so much meaning for South Africans. On 21st March 1960, the oppressed peacefully protested the Pass Laws in Sharpeville, but were met with such brutal and deadly force. That day, 69 lives were lost and 180 were injured. A day this nation will never forget.
On Human Rights Day, we pay tribute to the activists who came before us by continuing their legacy. By speaking out against injustice wherever it hides. By making this country live up to its highest ideals. A place where everyone is equal. Where everyone is free and everyone is treated with dignity. That is the South Africa they dreamed of. That is the South Africa we can still create, if we carry the torch of justice together.
I invite you to join me in taking meaningful actions to support human rights causes, not just during the annual commemoration but throughout the year. Here’s how you can make a difference.
Raise Awareness
We all have a voice – use it. Share posts on social media about human rights issues that matter to you. Start meaningful conversations with close ones about topics like equality, justice, and dignity. The more we talk about and shine a light on these issues, the more progress we can make towards a more just world.
Combat Discrimination
A key way we can stand up for human rights is by combating discrimination in our own lives and communities. Challenge racist, sexist, or phobic comments from others. Make it clear that this type of speech is unacceptable. Report incidents of harassment or hate crimes. Remember that bigotry thrives in silence. Hire people without regard for gender, orientation, race, or other factors unrelated to the job. An equitable workplace is a better workplace. Support businesses owned by marginalised groups. Use your purchasing power intentionally. You can also speak up for inclusion and diversity in your organisations. Foster welcoming spaces. Finally, reflect on your own biases. We all have more learning and growth to do.
Support Organisations
Donate or volunteer your time with organisations that promote and protect human rights. They need resources and helping hands to monitor abuses, assist victims, lobby governments, and reform laws. See if organisations like Gender Justice, Black Sash, or People Against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP) have any campaigns or events on 21st March that you can contribute to. Your support enables their important work.
Support Victims
Those who have experienced human rights violations need allies. Provide support through volunteering, donations, or simply being there to listen. Offer help without judgement or expectations. Respect their privacy and boundaries. Understand that your support should empower victims without revictimising them. You have the chance to restore dignity and hope.
Promote Inclusion
Lasting change requires dismantling systems of exclusion. Look for ways you can promote inclusion in your community. Advocate for diversity in schools and workplaces. Make sure marginalised groups have a seat at the table for decision making. Listen to their needs and amplify their voices. An inclusive society uplifts human rights for all.
Lead by Example
Be the change you wish to see. Make human rights a priority in your daily life. Treat all people with equality, empathy, and respect. Have the courage to stand up for others. Participate in civic duties like voting to shape society. Your own actions can inspire and multiply. Even small daily acts send ripples through communities to protect human rights.
South Africa, you fill me with hope. Here’s to progress, here’s to unity, here’s to the light that shines within each person. Happy Human Rights Day!
