Cancer. A single word that evokes so much fear and uncertainty. Yet on this World Cancer Day, I choose to see it differently. I see the people who continue to fight, to live, to love. I see the doctors and nurses who provide comfort and care. I see the researchers working tirelessly for better treatments. And I see all of us coming together in hope.
Many organisations around the world are leading the charge against cancer. Right here in South Africa, we have CANSA. They provide critical services like screening, support groups, and counselling. They empower us with knowledge. They spread encouragement and positivity among those impacted by cancer. The work they do is amazing – moving us closer to a world without this terrible disease. As do similar groups worldwide like the American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK.
But let’s not stop at appreciation. Let’s join hands with them and help out in whatever way we can.
Being there with kindness and understanding can be the greatest gift we offer to those battling cancer. Help with medical bills if you can, make meals, drive to appointments, send encouraging messages – any act of love supports healing.
Those who are in a position to give more, consider donating to organisations like CANSA. Any contribution can go a long way toward furthering their mission.
I encourage workplaces, schools, and organisations to join in on CANSA’s Shavathon, which runs from February 24th to March 29th. Even individuals can participate. It’s a fun and meaningful way to show solidarity with cancer patients by shaving your head, spraying your hair, or even just getting a sticker.
Remember, together, we’re stronger than cancer.
