Maha-shivaratri arrives under a new moon, when the celestial orb retreats into inky blackness. The 14th day of the dark half of Phalguna is the night Hindus plunge deep within to commune with the innermost core of their being.

Devotees forsake the trivialities of the material world to sit in silence and awaken to the eternal light within. They fast, not just from food but from finite longings, restlessness, and regrets. As the darkness grows outside, an inner illumination awakens.

On this moonless night, Hindus mark the divine union between Lord Shiva and Parvati, the male and female energies that shape existence. Their marriage brings balance to the cosmos, uniting duality into oneness. But Shiva also dances alone on this night. His dance is the source of creation, preservation, and destruction that keeps the cycle of life flowing eternally.

In temples and homes, lamps and candles glow in prayerful vigil. Devotees bring offerings of love to Shiva and Parvati. They bathe their statues in milk and honey, adorning them with velvety roses. They burn incense, ring bells, and chant their names to draw near to their transcendent shakti. For the Lingayat community, it’s time to honour the guru with appreciation gifts.

There is magic in this night, as the mundane world falls away. The heavens open to reveal life’s mystical nature. Lord Shiva is said to be more accessible on Maha-shivaratri, granting boons and cleansing past karma.

Feel Lord Shiva’s presence within and all around you. Sense his invitation to let go of that which no longer serves you. He is asking you to sit quietly with yourself. To journey inward. There, in the silence of your being, you can reconnect with your highest self. You can realign with your purpose and passion. You can release your fears and open up to new possibilities.

As another year brings us to this night of Lord Shiva, I wish you inner peace and awakening. May you find the courage to shed the old, making way for the new. May you see life’s contradictions as two sides of the same coin. Darkness is only the shadow of light. Destruction bears creation. On this transformative night, I wish you renewal and rebirth.
