Basant Panchami – celebrated on the fifth day of the Magh month of the Hindu calendar – is the arrival of spring in India. The fields turn yellow with bursts of mustard flowers. The sweet fragrance of the season fills the air. And our spirits lift with the promise of warmer and brighter days ahead.

During the Vasant Panchami Festival, we worship Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, and wisdom. She represents the creative energy that stirs when nature springs back to life. Let us be inspired by her grace to nurture the seeds of learning and imagination within ourselves and our children. Pick up that brush, strum that guitar, or open a new book. Express your unique voice through writing, song, or dance.

Another reason is to recognise the season for a fresh start. Just like the plants budding with new growth, we feel inspired to pursue enlightenment and self-improvement. The colour yellow is given importance on this day as it signifies the brilliance of nature and the vibrancy of the human spirit.

The festival also carries deep spiritual meaning. As the dormant earth awakens, so too does our inner light. The darkness of ignorance melts away, allowing knowledge and wisdom to blossom.

As part of the Saraswati Puja, people place books, musical instruments, yellow flowers, sweets, and other offerings near the idol of Saraswati as a mark of respect. Young children are often dressed in yellow and brought before the goddess’ altar to begin their education by writing their first words. Many schools organise special pujas where students pay respect to books – – the sources of knowledge.

As I end, I would like to remind you, dear reader, that you are bold like the strong sun, constant as the awakening earth, fragrant as the blossoming flowers, and melodious as the singing birds. So on this Basant Panchami, I wish you renewal, joy, and the vitality of new beginnings. May Saraswati’s wisdom flow through you. And may you feel a renewed energy to follow your passions and grow.

Here’s to embracing the spring of life with an open heart and a creative spirit.
