I am excited to share with you some of the highlights from our recent Vaisakhi Samagam celebration here at Gurudwara Sahib Johannesburg. From the 19th to 21st April, we welcomed over 600 guests from all walks of life to commemorate this special time.
The Vaisakhi Samagam holds deep meaning in my heart. On this day, we observe the birth of the Khalsa Panth and the Sikh New Year. In 1699, our tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, united his followers into an order of saint-soldiers. They vowed to uphold justice and protect the defenceless. Since then, Khalsa Panth members have lived by the principles laid down by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Our people make pilgrimages to join in prayer, song, and communal feasting. In processions of devotion, we march through the streets, singing hymns of glory to the One. All are welcome at the Guru’s door, and the langar is overflowing. For a few days, divisions fall away; young and old, rich and poor, gather as one family.
We started with Akand Path on the morning of Friday, 19 April. Our voices joined together, singing the holy words of the Guru Granth Sahib in one unbroken chant. What a blessing to have been immersed in our scriptures, feeling their wisdom and grace surround us. On Saturday, we stepped out into the streets for Nagar Kirtan. Shoulder to shoulder with my brothers and sisters, we marched through Sandton, sharing our songs of faith.
Amid these heartening moments, it was an honour to host His Excellency Shri Prabhat Kumar Ji, High Commissioner of India to South Africa, and Consul General of India Johannesburg Mr. Mahesh Kumar Ji. Their presence was a bridge between our local celebration and the global community, underscoring the universal messages of Vaisakhi. Sharing prayers and dialogues with them and witnessing their interaction with individuals from diverse backgrounds was a poignant reminder of the unifying power of faith and culture.
The beauty of this year’s Samagam was magnified by those who journeyed from places afar, with special mention to our Sadh Sangat from Botswana and Durban. The distances they covered to join us for these three days of festivity underscored the deep-seated bond within our community.
My appreciation knows no limits for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department. Their cooperation with the Nagar Kirtan was instrumental in making this march a beacon of peace, order, and spiritual jubilation.
Thank you to every person who contributed, participated, and supported this grand celebration. Let us go forward, living the values of Vaisakhi every day until we gather again under the grace of the Guru.
